cup of tea and a slice of cake - A that's what makes England great , according to Milton Keynes poet
laureate Mark Niel.
Reading a poem to mark St George's Day on April
23, the poet appeared alongside the Mayor, Brian White, and the High Sheriff of Buckinghamshire, Jo Barclay, at the MK Rose to mark the occasion. Along with The Beatles, chips and flakes with strawberry sauce, Mark spoke of his love for the country, while the Mayor placed roses at the site.
Mayor Brian White said: "People always say we never do anything to celebrate the English national saint, and we thought it was about time Milton Keynes did something. We have four pillars here, one for each saint of the UK.
"We chose to mark the occasion at MK Rose because it's a public place for celebration, commemoration and remembrance . Some events are sad, such as Remembrance Day, and some are for celebrating, such as World Skipping Day."
The MK Rose was opened late last year and is a public calendar marking the days of importance to the people of Milton Keynes. With 140 pillars around the geometric design of a flower, there are some celebrating Olney's heritage, including Amazing Grace Day on January 1, 1773, and John Newton Day on July 24.
Mayor Brian White added: "The Rose is all about celebration and what it means to be English, which is just about anything you want it to mean. That's the brilliance of it. This is Milton Keynes and we are celebrating our right to be English." Other pillars at the site include Open University Day on June 23 and Pet Pillar Day on October 4.
