Readers' Letters Talking to the press Dear Mark (Mark Lancaster MP, cc Phonebox Magazine), I feel sure you will have seen the editorial in this month's Phonebox about the NALC's advice to its parish council members not to allow any talking to the press without permission. Whatever next! Thankfully, your Mr Pickles has apparently spoken against this (telegraph.co.uk/news/ politics/1 091 0694/Parish-councils-urged-to-ignore-order-to-steer-clear-of-journalists. html) but I would be grateful if you could add your voice to his not inconsiderable weight by writing to all parish councils within your patch to remind them about free speech, elected representation, transparency and freedom of information etc. Unfortunately, given the example of your own leader and his recent attempts to deliver press censorship by political means, there are evidently others who think now is the time to form a queue. I sincerely hope you are not among them. With very best wishes, Richard Meredith Olney Pre-School delighted with new playhouse Everyone at Olney Pre-School would like tothankthe local community who took part in our fundraising events this year and raised enough money to buy and install our fantastic new playhouse. The children love playing in it, whether it be using it for imaginative games or as a quiet space for looking at books in. We are so grateful to everyone who has helped to make this possible and given the children such a brilliant new play space. We would also like to send our best wishes to all our leavers and hope they have a lovely time at school. We're looking forward to welcoming back our younger children and getting to know all of our new starters in September. Abigail Chippendale Former Mayor says thank you Hello Ron, I thought it was abouttime that I wrote to say thank you, both to you as Editor of Phonebox and to all the readers who read and commented on my monthly ramblings as Mayor of Newport Pagnell. It was really good to let people know what goes on in the real world of local councils. There's so much political posturing from some MK Councillors trying to out point their opponents that invades our papers and magazines, and overshadows the real work done by the local councils. As Mayor, I was privileged to have represented Newport Pagnell and was truly honoured to have been considered in the first place. Mike Barry is now in the hot seat and I wish him and his wife Cheryl the very best. John C Smith Remembering Rev Val Reveley Dear Editor, May we extend our gratitude to everyone who contributed to the collection at the funeral service for the late Rev Val Reveley. It was Val's wish that this money should go to Advantage Africa and the Olney-Newton Link and we are grateful for the substantial sum shared between our two charities to advance our work in Africa.
