                                 Great War Remembrance
As the anniversary of the start of the 1 st World war of the 20th Century approaches it is time to remember those who fell for their country in conflict. Many parishes erected war memorials to their fallen and our corner of north Buckinghamshire was no exception. Recently the impact of the loss of so many local citizens has been forgotten but families were changed for ever. The names on our local war memorials have often become merely patterns recognised once a year on Remembrance Sunday.
The local branches of the Royal British Legion as the custodians of national remembrance now plan to publish the names of those listed on local war memorials on the 100th anniversary of their deaths. Every month readers of the Phonebox will be invited to remember the fallen of the 1914-18 war. Although some parishes have maintained good records we do
 Armed Forces Day
recognise that inevitably some of our fallen will have been missed from local memorials. Chris Roberts, Chairman of the Olney Branch of the Royal British Legion (rbl.olney@gmail.com) will collate lists of the fallen by month (date), name, rank and unit so that they can be listed alongside their fallen comrades.
If families have more detail then they are invited to send it, pictures would be particularly welcome, to Chris for inclusion either on the 1 00th anniversary of death or at a later date. I can do little more than invite you to remember with the words of the Royal British Legion exhortation:
They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age Shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.
Chris Roberts, Olney Branch, RBL
AsTown Mayor I attend a number of wonderful events during the year, but I have to say that our annual Armed Forces Day commemoration is always the most special of them all.
We owe so much to those who were prepared to put their lives on the line to protect the freedom that we continue to enjoy and it is gratifying to see that so many who served their country in the past are still alive and active today. Once again there was a magnificent turn-out from our forces veterans and long may that continue to be the case. Steve Clark 70 Phonebox Magazine
