Expensive china stolen from Age UK in Olney
Who would believe that, in this lovely town of Olney, someone would steal a Beswick China Trout worth in excess of £165 from a charity shop? Well, sadly, this did happen in August.
Essential funds that would have been collected by Age UK MK, to help an ever increasing elderly population, have now been lost due to the theft. In the future it could be you or your loved ones needing that help! In addition to the loss of the funds, there has also been considerable upset for the staff and volunteers who work so hard to make the shop a welcoming place for our customers to browse and buy. Those of you who have not worked in a charity shop would, I’m sure, be very surprised at how much effort is put in by all concerned. I’m certain that the donor of this valuable item would be grieved to learn that their donation is benefitting one selfish person, instead of the widespread help it could have assisted with.
Many of you reading this will be our regular, much-valued customers. I know that you will be as dismayed as we are about this theft. Therefore, we ask you to help us end this sort of crime by informing members of Age UK MK staff of anyone acting suspiciously in our shop. In addition, if you know anything about the theft of the Beswick Trout, please come into the shop to let us know or inform the community police officer, to whom the matter has been reported. Many thanks for reading and for your help in the future.

The rewards of cooking for the Monday lunch club
Three years ago I moved to Olney to be near my daughter. I had led a very busy life previously and was concerned that I would be lonely and bored. I saw an advertisment in The Phonebox for a volunteer cook and decided to apply. I enjoyed cooking, had never cooked for a large number of people, but was willing to ‘have a go’.
I was interviewd by a lovely lady who was happy to let me loose cooking for the elderly folk of Olney. Anne was concerned that the lunch club would not be able to continue for very long as she was poorly and didn’t know how long she could cope with the administration. So in my usual thoughtless fashion I jumped in with both feet. The admin was something I was able to cope with but feeding 30 people a two course meal by midday was quite daunting and caused me a number of sleepless nights. When I began there were four cooks and lots of volunteers to help the cook. Unfortunately we are down to three cooks. At the moment one of us is poorly so there are only two of us having to alternate the weeks. However the recipients don’t seem to mind or get fed up with us and are always very kind and appreciative. We would really love to have another cook join our team. You don’t have to be experienced in cooking for lots of people as we will support you and provide you with all the guidance you might need.
If you would like to join us for a meal at Clifton Court Lunch Club on Mondays at midday we will be delighted to make you feel welcome.
