September brings with it return to school, a return to routine and of course often a return to cooler/damper weather. Ideas of exercise or striving for some goal by christmas become a focus. Sometimes it is a new house or a new job. All of these scenarios can result in musculo-skeletal problems giving pain whether it be back, neck or head, young or old.
Throughout the last year we noticed a huge increase in the number of 14 to 18 year old patients complaining of back pain. Many parents were worried that a child of that age should not be suffering pain and should not need osteopathic intervention. This did lead us to look into the changes over the years and this iswhatwesaw:whenIwasa child (obviously many years ago) we sat at wooden desks with the lid at a slant on a fixed bench. We used pencils and paper and rulers and slide rules (does this ring any bells for the similar aged?). Gradually by the time my
children studied for their GCSEs calculators were most definitely ‘in’ and computers were fast becoming the ‘tool’ for study (gone is the encyclopaedia, national geographic and thesaurus). Nowadays the kids study with computers, they write and document all their work on computers and these computers are now lap-tops. Gone are the days of sitting on an office chair working at a desk top PC with reasonable chance of good posture. Here is the day of the lap-top with kids slouched on their bed, on the floor, on the settee; studying (hopefully) for hours. This brings with it many causes of pain and discomfort. So forgive them their bad posture as we sometimes lack it ourselves but....lets be honest, we are pleased they are revising at all!
If you or your family feel you may need osteopathy please feel free to call us either for an appointment or to find out more if we can help on 01234 712003.

Physiotherapy for Back Pain
Hello, I am Eileen Lewis, I have a BSc in Physiotherapy and also am a qualified Acupuncturist with over 20 years experience. This month I would like to cover Back Pain.
At some point nearly all of us will unfortunately suffer from Back Pain. This may cause pain and stiffness in the upper back (thoracic spine) around the ribs and shoulder blades or lower back pain (lumbar spine). The pain may refer to the buttocks, legs, trunk, abdominal or groin region. You may also experience pins and needles in the legs or feet.
Many of my patients present with these symptoms and after a thorough examination the cause of the problem can be established. It may be the vertebral joints of the thoracic or
lumbar spine, the sacroiliac joints of the pelvis, the nerves or the surrounding muscles or fascia that are the source of your Back Pain. The good news is that 95% of all Back Pain gets better given the correct advice, exercises and treatment. Depending on the source of your pain Physiotherapy treatment that will facilitate recovery may consist of Mobilising or Core Stability/Pilates based exercises, Myofascial Release Techniques, Joint Mobilisations or Manipulations, Ultrasound or Acupuncture.
I also always give general advice regarding management of Back Pain in both the short term and long-term, in order to help alleviate the acute pain and prevent recurring problems.
So if you are suffering from any of these symptoms and this all sounds too familiar, then give me a call on 01234 881400 or alternatively please visit my website for any further information at www.bedfordphysio.co.uk
I look forward to helping you.
