Readers’ Letters An Evening with Dementia
Dear Editor,
A performance entitled ‘An Evening with Dementia’ could be considered a slight turn- off in terms of going out for an enjoyable evening to some.
However, we went along to The Stables last Monday to see Trevor T. Smith’s wonderful monologue on the topic. A stunning performance, it was a poignant but amusing insight into the life of someone who ‘has’ but does not ‘suffer’ from Dementia. It is a piece that should be seen by anyone involved with this appalling condition, in any shape or form.
The play was presented as a Dementia awareness initiative in Olney, organised by the Friends of Cobbs Garden Surgery, the charity based at the doctors’ practise.
I understand that the Dementia Programme and the performance itself were sponsored by various businesses in the town. Olney is lucky to have such generous patrons. A most informative and enjoyable evening. Gillian Morgan
Ebola is a war, so it’s time we started working for peace
Dear Editor,
Sierra Leone has hit the headlines recently so I don’t need to tell your readers much about what is going on there except to say that, at the time of writing this, everyone we know through the Link or personal friends are still safe.
They are carrying on with their lives as best they can under great fear and stress but hoping and praying that Ebola can be brought under control. As far as the Olney-Newton Link is concerned, there is nothing we, as a small charity, can do to conquer Ebola. That has to be left now to those with much greater resources. What we can do is look to the future. As I was told in a text a few days ago, ‘When in times of war, you work for peace’.
Please do continue to support us as we work towards better times. We are continuing to build the community toilets and understand that two are now almost complete. We are sending out computers and first aid equipment but will need to increase our efforts to improve their public health and sanitation facilities. Your support is desperately needed, so please continue. Thank you! For more information, please visit olneynewtonlink.org.uk.
