ohn Smail, our Secretary, has been a member of Olney Bowling Club for 50 years, having joined in August 1964.
John moved to Buckinghamshire from his
native Scotland to join the Police. I would like to be
able to say that he was recruited because he was
an outstanding candidate. He thinks it was because
he had a golf handicap of 6!
He moved to Olney in 1964, with wife Peggy and
family, to become our “village bobby”. A post he held
for nine years.
John was our Club President from 2005 to 2007. He
became Club Secretary in 1980 (a post he still holds).
As well as bowling for Olney, John represented
Buckinghamshire in county matches on many occasions.
In addition to his efforts on the committee, John has worked tirelessly for the club during his membership. Turning his hand to whatever was required, from grass cutting to carpet laying and plastering. Having said that, no-one can remember seeing him in the kitchen!
John also played rugby for many years with Olney Rugby Club.
In addition to his work for Olney Bowling Club, John has been a member of Olney Town Council for 14 years and was Mayor for two years from 2007. He is also a member of the Carlton House Club Committee.
Many congratulations on your Golden Jubilee Jock, and many thanks for your immense contribution to Olney Bowling Club during the past five decades.
