Pre-schoolers bury time capsule in new nursery footings
Children at Cherry Trees Day Nursery in Cranfield have sent messages into the future after burying a
time capsule on the building site that will become their new home next year. Messages about fun activities at the existing Ofsted-rated ‘Outstanding’ day nursery in West Road, together with photographs, hand-drawn pictures, newspapers and stamps were buried near protected trees in the garden of the new nursery on the Cranfield University site.
As Manager Emma Jestice explained the time capsule project is one of many themed activities at the nursery – including two construction ‘role play’ areas complete with plans, child-sized ‘mixers’, hard hats and high visibility jackets – concerning the new build. “Practitioners and children are equally excited about moving home. The huge light filled spaces and garden areas planned for the new nursery have captured the imagination of us all. The opportunities for imaginative play and learning are endless and we are very excited,” she said.
The 120-place nursery with separate, age-appropriate indoor and outdoor play and learning spaces and a large light-filled suite in the middle for specialist craft, cooking and other activities, is due to open in Spring next year.
Three-year-old Archie Tracey was one of three children chosen to bury the capsule after he contributed photographs of the new site, taken in each season, and stories about the wildlife he has seen in and around Chicheley Creek, which will be viewed by children on special terraces in the new building.
“I hope to see the ducks and wiggly worms again,” said Archie about his hopes for the new nursery.
In the meantime, field-trips by Cherry Trees children to the site in Duncan Road are planned so that they too can monitor the progress of the build and learn about the processes involved. Cherry Trees Day nursery is part of the award-winning, employee-owned Childbase Partnership which has 46 day nurseries throughout the South of England.
Childbase Partnership’s CEO Mike Thompson, and Commercial Director, Lynda Gostelow, helped Archie, Zara Webb (4) and Lewis Fenn (3), bury the capsule in a site which will be permanently marked for future generations of nursery children.
MK Fight For First Home Win

Daniel Powell’s second-half strike provided MK Dons with their first ever Championship home win in the club’s brief history with a well
fought 1-0 victory against Neil Lennon’s Bolton Wanderers on Tuesday 18th August. The possession of the ball was shared in the first half, with neither team able to get a foothold in the game. Dons’ only clear-cut chance of the first period came after good interchange play from Darren Potter and Jordan Spence opened an opportunity for Carl Baker, but he blazed his effort over the bar from a tight angle.
MK’s goalkeeper David Martin was tested throughout the half by Wanderers, first palming Dean Moxey’s 20 yard drive to safety and then, later in the half, swiftly diving high to his left to tip a stinging Zach Clough volley over the bar.
The breakthrough for the home team came 15 minutes into the second half, Samir Carruthers finding space to slip a pinpoint ball through to substitute Daniel Powell who
kept a cool head to slot past Ben Amos in the Bolton goal.
It was then backs against the wall for Karl Robinson’s men, with Bolton being camped in the home side’s territory for the majority of the second half, clawing for an equaliser. Dorian Dervite came closest for the Trotters, the French centre back climbing highest to
meet a corner but directing his firm header just wide.
MK remained impenetrable until the final whistle to pick up their second victory in the Championship campaign. Karl Robinson’s men have now achieved six points out of a possible nine in their opening league games, a strong start by the promoted side.
