Readers’ Letters Recreation Ground Parking
Dear Sir, I have received a letter from Milton Keynes Council (MKC) headed “Application no; 15/02176/FUL. Proposal: Change of use from recreation ground to additional car parking. At: Land at Playing Fields East street Olney”.
As a local resident, I am invited to offer comments. I live immediately opposite the recreation ground, and one of my neighbours has received a similar letter. Others may well have done so.
About a year ago there was a proposal to erect a fence around part of the recreation ground. On that occasion I was notified of the proposal, as were some neighbours. It was said that notices about the proposal were posted on the fence between the Recreation Ground and East Street. I did not see any such notices, nor did others to whom I spoke. These included regular dog walkers who used the field.
At the time I felt that merely informing people who lived in the immediate vicinity of the Recreation ground was inadequate. The field that became the Recreation Ground was purchased by Olney Council in the thirties as a facility for the whole town, and that the proposal should have been more widely advertised. I recall a notice in your publication on the matter. However the proposal was approved, and the fence erected.
My purpose in writing to you is my fear that history will be repeated unless the current proposal is more widely advertised. Yours faithfully, I. Joyce
The Uncaring Few
Newport Pagnell has again won a Silver-Gilt award in the RHS Britain in Bloom competition. Yet again a truly wonderful achievement, considering the size and quality of the towns we were up against in our region. The care and attention taken by residents and some businesses to enhance where we live, was applauded by the judges. We should all be very proud of our town.
Gold is obviously the goal to achieve. Again we were very close to getting that. And again it is the thoughtless uncaring few, that could not give a toss about anyone else but themselves, that denied us that accolade. Yes, you who drop litter and those of you who do not clear up your dog’s mess. You are the ones that I am moaning about. You are the ones who use Bury Field as your personal dumping ground. It is the biggest public open space in the entire borough of Milton Keynes and it is ours. That is all of us. Not just you.
Just for a moment, imagine a small child running free in the field. Wonderful! Until they slip on a discarded burger or pizza carton and fall face down in some dog’s mess. This is not me making this up. It does happen. And it is you, the uncaring, who is to blame.
It is more than getting an award. It is personal pride in caring for where you live, by disposing of litter and dog’s mess in a responsible way. Just for once: Think of someone else for a change. You might get to like it.
Regards, John Smith

Thank You!
On 13th September 2015, the OOKs (Olney Old Knees) took part in the Great North Run to raise funds for MS. It was an extremely hot day but we all made it to the end and had a fantastic weekend running for a great cause. Earlier in the year a Barn Dance was held to kick-start the fundraising and we would like to take this opportunity to thank all those who attended and donated. Our special thanks to The Carlton Club for their fabulous venue and to Roy & Co. for the great tunes, as well as the following businesses for their kind donations: The Jewel of Inner Healing, Sandwich Land, Costa, Beans, Teapots, Afterglow, Green Thumb Lawn, Tristan Hays Interiors, Olney Framers, Bernadette Foster, The Co-op, Tesco, Waitrose, The Body Shop and The Olney Gym.
Once again, a BIG thank you, your generosity will help fund vital research, provide information, support and services to people with MS, a neurological condition that affects over 100,000 in the UK.
