Britain in Bloom
Silver Gilt Award
Newport Pagnell Town Council is delighted that the town has achieved a Silver Gilt award in this year’s Britain in Bloom, despite the fact that the rules
changed a year ago and we are now compared with much larger towns than our own, with budgets twice the size of ours and with significant numbers of grounds staff to work on their project.
This year we gained points on community involvement in the scoring. A great deal of the work undertaken in Newport is done by a small group of volunteers who dedicate their time to horticultural efforts, and the open gardens in Lakes Lane, the pavement planting in Wolverton Road, and the copious work undertaken by the Partnership Garden Group all contributed to the improved score. Winners of the Best Front Garden in Newport Pagnell competition, Mr and Mrs R Holland, also featured in the Britain in Bloom marking.
However points were lost on some environmental issues, with the litter and dog fouling around Bury Common considered to be big negatives. We can all contribute to this, by taking our litter and dog bags home for disposal.
Commendations must also go to the schools for
their contributions. Green Park Primary School received a highly commended award, and Ousedale School got a commended award. Very well done to both! The judges were so impressed with the efforts of both schools that they entered the schools themselves into the competition.
Above is the lovely spring garden the Methodist Church displayed, which added to the High Street scores.
