Olney Community Allotment
Opening Day
On Sunday 14th September we held our opening day of the new Olney Community Allotment, officiated by Deputy Mayor and Mayoress of Milton Keynes, Olney Town Council Mayor and many of the kind sponsors of this great project.
The Olney Town Council agreed back in November 2014 to provide a vacant allotment plot for the purpose of creating a Community Allotment (the first project of its kind in Olney). The land is east of the church and was bequeathed by the Earl of Dartmouth in the early 1900’s – which is a thriving haven for families, gardeners and local residents.
In April of this year the Olney Allotment Association started creating a safe community allotment to enable Olney residents to come and try out gardening in a friendly safe environment. Since then we have been actively fund raising for the first phase. We have been so fortunate to have been supported by Santander, John Lewis, a kind donation of £1,500 from the Mk Community Foundation, and last but not least, a kind local resident donated a large poly tunnel to assist with all year round gardening.
This project has been an amazing success and we now have over 12 plots taken by a wide range of ages and abilities for people and abilities we are an inclusive project encouraging people with walking disabilities, depression, health issues and the interest is growing day by day.
I would like to thank all of the donations and help we have received over the last 10 months and a special thank you to Mike Totton the treasurer of the Olney Allotment Committee who has erected and built with the help of a band of volunteers this lovely environment.
