Decrypting the Codes at Bletchley Park
Talking to a Bletchley Park volunteer
This winter, Bletchley Park has several exciting events and exhibitions for the whole family to enjoy. Having recently been in the
spotlight in Studiocanal’s film The Imitation Game, some of which was filmed at Bletchley Park itself, the park has seen lots of new visitors from far and wide.
On 8th November, the Royal British Legion will be holding their Remembrance Parade, which will start at Bletchley Park. This is such an important event and has been increasing in numbers in the past few years; it is now one of the largest Remembrance Parades in the country!
I spoke to volunteer, Rebecca Townsend, about her time at Bletchley Park and what it’s like to be involved in the running of the museum. Having now volunteered there for about four months, she says, “I’ve hugely enjoyed my time at Bletchley Park so far, it’s flown by! Everyone has been really friendly and encouraging, so I felt settled into the role very quickly. It has been a perfect way to gain invaluable experience in communicating with
others and has already vastly improved my confidence. I’ve loved being able to volunteer somewhere with such immense historical importance.”
At Bletchley Park, there are various exhibitions and events happening at the moment including the 1940s day on 5th December. Join the volunteers and make- up artist, Sarah Dunn, for an exciting day of 1940s glamour. They will take you back in time to show you how to style your own hair, make-up and clothes to create that iconic 1940s look.

Volunteering at Bletchley Park definitely has its plus points. Rebecca proudly mentioned that they get “many visitors who have had friends or close family members who worked at the park during the Second World War, and it’s always fascinating to hear some of their little snippets of what life was like during their time there. Having the opportunity to hear stories told in that way just adds that extra something that sometimes isn’t quite captured when written in a history book.” Finally, I asked Rebecca what inspired her to volunteer at Bletchley Park. She says: “I decided to become a volunteer at Bletchley Park because I thought it would be a great opportunity which would provide me with a good grounding in working with other people. It’s been a perfect way to learn more about what happened there and the crucial part that everyone who worked at Bletchley played.” It is intriguing to think that Bletchley Park was once a very secretive, unknown location where code-breakers were working all hours of the day to decipher codes – most famously the German Enigma codes – in World War 2.
