Little acts of kindness
At Pilgrims we want our children to be familiar with and understand the concept of helping others, reflecting the school values of Kindness and Respect. By introducing ways in which they can contribute to helping others, this encourages them to use their imagination, creativity and
compassion to engage in acts of generosity, even at an early age.
Small acts of kindness can go a long way and with Christmas fast approaching, we feel that this is the ideal opportunity to talk to children about the “giving and receiving of presents”, introducing them to the fact that children around the world may not receive gifts from Father Christmas, as they do. By getting children involved at home, sorting through any old clothes, books, toys, or games to donate, they can participate in their own charitable activity and learn how just one of their old toys can mean so much to another child.
At Pilgrims we regularly like to give children the opportunity to participate in a range of events to raise awareness and funds for different charities. In the past this has included International Down Syndrome Awareness Day, a Victorian tea party to raise money for Barnardos, Red Nose Day and Jeans for Genes Day, to mention just a few. Two of our children even had their long, thick hair cut in order to donate it to the Little Princess Charity, which provides free real-hair wigs and hair pieces to children who have lost their hair as a result of cancer and other childhood illnesses. Reading and discussing children’s picture books is a great tool for helping children embrace kindness for others as a daily habit. Outdoor Learning
We have had a busy end to a very enjoyable half-term. We welcomed Mark Lancaster in to school. We were all interested to hear about
his job and what happens in the House of Commons. The children and staff asked him some very probing questions!
