Frogmore House
At the beginning of April the rst round of this year’s Three Counties Quiz was held at Winslow, and two teams duly
made their way to this new venue.
As ever, the questions were quite dif cult (depends if you know the answer!) but our six intrepid ladies fared well and came 12th and 13th out of 20 entries. Not a bad result, especially as one team was made up of ‘ rst timers’. Will they go again next year?
The speaker in April was Anne Leaver who told us about the Dysfunctional Family at Frogmore House.
This, of course, was the family of King George III, a Hanoverian, who married a German Princess whom he had never met. They lived partly at Buck House in London, and partly at Windsor, which she hated. Eventually George bought a farm at Frogmore and had a new house built there for the family to live in. They had 13 children, but the girls were all kept under strict control and not allowed to marry when they wished. Instead they learnt skills such as drawing, needlework, and book
binding. The boys, of course, were a different matter and behaved as boys will, marrying for money, and having mistresses.
When ‘mad’ King George was ill later in his life, he was contained at Windsor Castle and underwent barbaric treatments for his condition, which was not understood at the time.
After George III died, one of his daughters, Augusta, inherited Frogmore and one of the rooms there contains paintings by her sister Elizabeth. A most interesting talk, illustrated with lovely photographs of Frogmore House. Competition winners were Doreen Slessor, Julia Pearce and Marion Stapleton.
The raf e was won by Pat Cutts and Cathy Rowse.
Newport Pagnell Women’s Institute meets on the second Tuesday of each month at 7.30pm in the café at the rear of the Methodist Church. In May we will hear about Medieval Dunstable, and then discuss this year’s resolutions. For further information please call Evelyn Mison on 01908 615630 or just turn up on the night.
