Celebrating Roald Dahl
100 years since his birth
The 13th September will mark 100 years since Roald Dahl’s birth and, to this day, his stories continue to inspire both children and adults across the world. Born in September 1916 in Cardiff, Wales, Dahl lived with his parents and sisters, Astri, Alfhild and Else. Sadly, when Dahl was just three years of age,
his seven-year-old sister, Astri, died from appendicitis, with his father dying just a few weeks later at the age of 57. Dahl’s mother decided to stay in Wales with Roald and his two sisters.
Dahl’s education began at the Cathedral School in Llandaff, Cardiff, and he then transferred to a boarding school in Weston-Super-Mare. He became very homesick at the boarding school, and even wrote a weekly letter to his mother but never admitted his homesickness. It was only after his mother’s death in 1967 that Dahl found that she had saved all of his letters. Dahl’s autobiography, Boy: Tales of Childhood, explains about his time at school. While at Repton School in Derbyshire, Dahl, along with other lucky students, was sent new Cadbury chocolate recipes to taste. It was at this time that Dahl dreamt of inventing his own chocolate, later inspiring him to write Charlie and the Chocolate Factory in 1964. From 1954, Dahl lived in Great Missenden. He ended up living in the village for 36 years until his death in 1990. It is in Great Missenden that you can now find the Roald Dahl Museum, full of treasures from Dahl’s lifetime.
Dahl’s stories include James and the Giant Peach, The Witches, Fantastic Mr Fox, The BFG, The Twits, Matilda, and George’s Marvellous Medicine. Even though it has been 26 years since his death, and over 50 years since his first story was published, Dahl’s books still sell in their millions.
