The Olney Newton Link
The Preschool and the associated Water Well
Those of you who have been following Rachel’s articles, will know that the Preschool has now reached roof level. It had been hoped that the roof would have been completed some time ago
but our Committee in Newton, very sensibly, decided to consider the possibility of future expansion prior to tackling this work. Therefore, they have reinforced the walls to ensure that they can take a further storey, should this be necessary in the future. We are now in the process of raising sufficient funds to complete the building and thereafter to fit it out. We also diverted funds to complete the water well. The Preschool is being built to house children between the ages of three and six, who lost one or both parents, or their major carer, to Ebola. These children having survived the crisis in Sierra Leone, caused by the Ebola outbreak, were left bereft. The children have been taken in by members of the extended family or friends. However, the problem that arises in countries such as Sierra Leone, where fridges and freezers or indeed basic electricity are almost completely unknown, is that food has to be provided for members of the family group each day.
The Preschool is intended to provide accommodation for
the children, whilst their carers are thus engaged.
There is no piped water in Newton. Water therefore has to be drawn from the wells that are available. The well, which is also close to the former Skills Training Centre, now the Olney Institute, will provide a vital water supply to the Preschool and to the surrounding community.
As usual we need your help to continue to raise funds to enable the work to be completed.
We have recently had a visit by a Sierra Leonean gentleman and it came to our attention that he was struggling to read small print. A visit to a local optician easily solved the problem – all he needed was a basic pair of reading glasses. He and his teaching colleagues in Sierra Leone had been told that their difficulty was caused by chalk dust and nothing can be done about it. Please would you look around your house or place of work and see if you have any spare reading glasses we can send out to help solve this simple but life restricting problem. If so, give me a ring on 711751 and I will collect.
All donations will be gratefully received by our treasurer. Please visit our website olneynewtonlink.org.uk for further details.
