The rise of the food festival
a street food revolution
year. The event is a great way for us to reach new and existing customers alike, showing our produce in the form of ‘street food’. We have been involved from the beginnings of BOFF and are pleased to continue.
“The summer months are as busy as ever at the farm as we have all our young stock in for Christmas during July and August which can sometimes be tricky, particularly with the heavy rain that we’ve had this year. Olney Farmers Market continues to create strong attraction for the town on the 1st Sunday of each month. The Pastures Farm stall continues to sell our Free Range Poultry and now home made produce from the Farm Shop and Café including Pies and Savouries, Cakes and Preserves.
“At the Food Festival we will be serving our favourites of Duck Wraps, Cajun Chicken Wraps and Chicken Satays with a variety of sauces. We will also have a Tandoori Chicken dish and a Guinea Fowl Dish, with a selection of salads. For those who just love sausages, we will have our homemade ‘Bangers’ too. “With BOFF rapidly approaching, our attention is now diverted to getting everything ready for what will hopefully be a very busy couple of days. We look forward to seeing you all.”
Food festivals are more popular than ever and have grown to become staples in the culinary calendar for any budding foodie or those looking for a
family day out lled with tasty delights. More and more people want to know where their food comes from and how it’s sourced, driving them to try new dishes and discover new ingredients. A food festival is the perfect place to try new things and experience different tastes from around the globe. It’s also a great way for smaller businesses to showcase their trade due to low costs and risks involved in running their stalls. Food festivals are a mouth-watering combination of fresh, local produce to buy from free-range meats to homemade condiments using locally sourced ingredients and fantastic streetfood stalls.
So what is streetfood? Streetfood is cooked or prepared food sold by vendors in a public location for immediate consumption. It is
perhaps most popular in countries around Asia and the Far East, with large markets dedicated to the sale of food cooked from fresh ingredients but the concept has existed across the world for centuries. In recent years, UK markets slowly fell into demise due to supermarkets undercutting their prices, which has led to market traders changing their strategy. The re-introduction of the farmers market allowed people to buy direct from the supplier with a clear route as to how their food had been produced. These markets have evolved into hundreds of regular produce and streetfood markets throughout the UK catering to an ever-growing number of food enthusiasts.
Here at Phonebox, we spoke to James at Pastures Farm who describes what it’s like to be part of the Big Olney Food Festival and Olney farmers market.
