My Perfect BOFF
Let’s start at 12 noon with a buttery grilled cheese sourdough sandwich, from last year’s Foodie favourite Good Times Cafe. Whilst navigating the afternoon entertainment, I’ll nibble on some Belgian Fries and a samosa from Tandoori Takeaway. Settling down to The MisFitz at 6.30pm the other half and I will share a goat curry from JJEB Farms and a chicken, wild fennel and potato stew from Wild Leaf. Later, having danced the night away to Spaced Out, if there is any left, I’ll opt for Urban Grilla’s pulled lamb, or if too much prosecco has been consumed, I might risk that Homer burger from OMG described elsewhere on this page!
Sunday: kick off with a sausage lled chilli roll from Amazing Grains and a Cheggs scotch egg. Fill up during the IndieGo Show with a proper Paella d’Olney dish and nish off with Gander’s apple & plum goat ice cream with some of Gabriella’s biscuits to take home. A perfect 48 hours.
Bell and Bear Book Club
What we read: The Go Between by LP Hartley. This is a slow and gentle, very English read. Set in a hot and sultry summer, the tension builds along with the temperature. It’s a story of class, of childhood, of wasted years. It’s beautifully written – purposefully one dimensional, with most of the story being from Leo’s 12 year old perspective, topped and tailed by the older and much more dispirited version of Leo. Some of us felt the narrative just a bit too slow and the closure a tad anti- climatic. But overall it was a huge success with all the group agreeing that all the characters were believable and in their own ways, loveable. Its been made into two lms and is currently in musical format starring Michael Crawford.
What we ate: Being a fairly upper class affair, we ate traditional English picnic fayre of smoked salmon, cucumber salad, bread, artichoke and herb butter. Tip Top as Leo might have said. Turned out there was a little romantic backstory to it also, which made for a lovely end to the evening.
Foodie in Shef eld
Didn’t really want to tell anyone about this. It was hard enough to get a table anyway. But hey, we’re not in Shef eld that often. Trippet’s Lounge Bar. It attracts a 50 something crowd – so we felt right at home. Black and white throughout, without being cold, live music Friday and Saturday (predominantly jazz or blues) and a huge selection of gin and zz, coupled with decent beers and a good wine list. Foodwise, they have a selection of small plates – we chose some freshly cooked light- as-a-feather chickpea samosas, a chicken terrine with tasty chutney and a selection of charcuterie meats. Also on offer were souf es, risottos, crab cakes and con t duck leg. The service was impeccable, the food delicious and the music spot-on. Mix those together and you have a very special place. Maybe we could persuade them to open Olney Trippets – the wine bar would be perfect...
