Brain Tumour Research, to whom we presented a cheque after they gave a talk at one of our regular Wednesday evening meetings. We will also be donating Christmas Trees to local schools for pupils to decorate. We recently entered two teams in a quiz competition between local Rotary Clubs. One of our teams did not come last. Our social events in December include a Christmas Dinner at one of our weekly meetings, and, being a hungry group of Rotarians, we will have a second at a village pub.
Preparations are well in hand for our 21st Jaipur Dinner, to be held at the Jaipur Restaurant, Milton Keynes on the evening of Monday 20th February 2017. This popular event is always sold out, so please book your tables early. Tickets cost £27 per person for a three course meal with welcome drink on arrival. Forty per cent of the ticket price, plus money raised by the raf e, is donated to the Rotary International Jaipur Limb Project. This organisation started making low cost prosthetics for amputees in the Indian city of Jaipur. This allowed recipients to return to active life and support their families. The Jaipur Limb Project has subsequently spread globally, helping victims of land mines, disease, accidents and natural disasters in developing countries. Please contact Rotarians Neil Beeton (neilbeeton@sky. com) or Rotarian John Belcher (jh.belcher@btinternet. com) to order tickets, or for more information.
Finally, we would like to send Season’s Greetings to all readers of this article, and wish you a happy, healthy and peaceful 2017. Thank you for your support of Rotary projects during 2016.
Olney-Newton Link
A10 Years of Support
nother year has passed and the Olney-Newton Link has been in existence as a Community Charity for 10 years. Without going into detail about how much money and other items we have sent from our community over the past 10 years we have continued to support our
sister community of Newton in Sierra Leone in all sorts of ways and I know our efforts are much appreciated. It is perhaps worth a reminder that we are extremely fortunate that all our committee members both here and in SL are unpaid and therefore the vast majority of the money donated goes to the projects. We have minimal overheads and no money goes into greedy pockets.
Our latest project is, of course, the building of a preschool for orphans of the Ebola crisis. Our aim was to get the children into the school by September but this was delayed as we diverted funds to complete an essential water well to serve both that school and the nearby Institute. Our aim then became to complete one classroom and an of ce by November. We think we will have achieved this. Thanks to the support we have received at recent events such as the concert in the Parish Church and the Quiz Night, as well as generous donations, we are hoping that the furniture can be purchased and the children can start moving in.
We are very much indebted to all of you who support us and particularly the businesses in Olney who have provided lovely raf e prizes to enhance our events. We are planning our Bottle Tombola again on Dickens Day and welcome any gifts of bottles, alcoholic or non-alcoholic, water or champagne, so please come along and have a punt! We are also collecting reading glasses and children’s toys, not electronic ones please. If you can help please visit our web-site or phone 01234 711751.
