Club of the Month: Olney & District Flower Club
Founded in 1974, the Olney & District Flower Club (formerly Emberton Flower Club) will celebrate its Golden Anniversary (50 years) this month and hopes to see members past and current at their Tea Party on the 4th June.
If you enjoy floral design or just love flowers then this is the Club for you. The Flower Club is an affiliated member of NAFAS (The National Flower Arranging Society) promoting floral art through floral demonstrations, talks, workshops, and flower festivals.
No experience is necessary. Club members range from novices to florists, skilled arrangers to those who arrange for local churches, home arrangers and those who simply enjoy flowers and watching others demonstrate.
The finished demonstrations are raffled at meetings, giving attendees the opportunity to take home the fabulous finished arrangements. Workshops give an opportunity to try floral designs, often with materials provided, and classes are friendly and non-competitive. To find out more why not come along to a meeting and enjoy a warm welcome.
This year’s programme is a mixture of demonstrations by florists and experienced NAFAS arrangers, workshops and a visit to a flower farm specialising in British flowers. Flowerdesignhaschangedconsiderablyoverthe50yearswithamove away from formal arrangements to freer contemporary designs.
With the emphasis on sustainability there is a return to the use of foam-free arranging using techniques such as wire and pin holders that would have been in use 50 years ago.
Olney is very lucky to have two florists in the town who provide quality flowers and foliage. British grown flowers are also becoming increasingly popular with flowers available fresh from local flower farms. Visitors and new members are very welcome.
Olney & District Flower Club meets at 7.30pm on the first Tuesday of the month at the Olney Centre. Membership costs £42 per year, visitors fee is £8.50 per meeting.
