Going out with friends and relatives and knocking on neighbours%u2019 doors for some Trick or Treat fun? Eating your favourite food and sweets? Well, there%u2019s more to it than that.The tradition of Halloween goes back, in most people%u2019s minds, many centuries and originates from an old Celtic tradition called Samhain. That was a festival marking the end of summer and the beginning of winter. It was the start of a new year on the Celtic calendar and people would celebrate by lighting bonfires, making carved lanterns from vegetables such as turnips and wearing costumes to scare off evil spirits.Pope Gregory III decided that 1st November would become the day for honouring all of the saints. Hallow is an old English word for Saint so the night before All Saints%u2019 Day (31st October) became known as All Hallows%u2019 Eve which would later become Halloween. Some people think Halloween is more straightforward than that, and is simply a Christian celebration to remember departed souls, while others say it%u2019s a church holiday.So, depending on your beliefs, you can thank those Celtic people or the Pope or the church elders when you%u2019re counting through your sweets and biscuits from Trick or Treating.In the meantime, have a go at this Halloween word search.
