Olney Neighbourhood Action Group (NAG)
Who are we, and what do we do?
The Olney Neighbourhood Action Group, or NAG, was established nearly two years ago. Our aim has been to increase public confidence, promote public safety and reduce crime and disorder. NAG is made up of representatives from your community, police, local councillors, youth workers and members of the public. We meet regularly to look at the priorities that have been identified by the local community, and determine how they can best be tackled. The members of NAG are, in effect, the ‘doers’ and the ‘problem solvers’, who are accountable locally through the community network for resolving the key issues identified by the community.
What has been achieved so far?
In conjunction with Olney Town Council, NAG has supported and assisted with the recent introduction of traffic calming in the East Street car park, along with the installation of a CCTV camera.
We have also seen the implementation of the Drinking Control Zone in Olney, which will give additional powers to prevent anti-social behaviour that may be caused by alcohol consumption. Some thirty signs have now been sited around the town, to make people aware of this.
Thursday. This meant that we had to inspect many areas of the town to assess the levels of graffiti, litter, structural
damage and the general appearance of Olney Town at a particular moment in time.
Photos were taken of the areas that were
visited. These photos will help us to
determine of the appearance if the town
has changed when we re-inspect these
areas in three months’ time. Following this initial audit, we are pleased to report that the amount of graffiti and litter around the town appears to have reduced significantly.
A funny thing happened on the way to the meeting!
A Police Superintendent was on his way to a meeting with Olney Town Councillors.
As he walked up the path to The Olney Centre his well-trained nose detected the smell of an illicit substance being smoked by youths gathered in the Centre gardens. On making the discovery he had the people involved arrested before proceeding to the meeting.
The way forward
There is a website that residents of Olney can visit to report any litter that has not been recently cleared. The address is www.mkweb.co.uk/street-care.
Residents can also contact NAG by telephoning 01234 711679 (Town Council Office). Also, Thames Valley Police have recently worked on their Neighbourhood Policing website which now features details about the priorities and the local team and will include the Olney NAG minutes too. All readers need to do is go to www.thamesvalley.police.uk/mk and click on Olney. ❑
