Junior Competitive News
Another inspiring month for the Olney juniors who are fighting it out in the local leagues. In the U12 Division 1, the boys convincingly won 6-0 against David Lloyd but will finish second as earlier matches went against them. In the U15 div1 the team look to be fighting for the title but will need David Lloyd to lose a match otherwise the title will be going their way. The club has secured the U15 div 2 title after a 6-0 win at Milton Keynes Tennis Club.
The summer match schedule has been published with Olney the only club in MK entering every league, boys and girls.
Individually our top players continue to play around the region. Daniel Cornwell playing in Bury St Edmonds and at Halton High Performance Centre with his sister Susannah runner up in a local grade 5 U10 event. Andrew Brewster, Timothy Ball and Niamh Lynch recently played at U8 & U9 county events with Andrew and Timothy both reaching the semi-finals.
Adult Coaching for New and Rusty players
The new coaching programme has been announced where award winning LTA head pro Nigel Willard and his team will deliver a range of sessions for pre-school through to adults 7 days a week. For adults this term we have rusty rackets and a new to tennis session for all those who would like to play tennis. It’s the perfect way to get into or return to tennis and enjoy the summer. For a copy of the programme go to www.olneytennis.net or get in touch with Nigel Willard.
New Court Opening
The new court is being officially opened by the Mayor of Olney on Saturday 2 April at 1pm and all are welcome. There are Junior events through the morning and a Grand American Tournament in the afternoon.
Adult Team News
The A team has followed three draws with three wins so has a good chance of promotion. In the last match, they won convincingly 7-1 against
Vagabonds thanks to Eleanor Carter, Katie Bennett, Les Folds and Richard Finch.
The B team won 5-3 against Stony Stratford in a real gale so had won four out of four then just lost their next match against Milton Keynes. The teams were Chris Wright. Simon Barter, Katie Bennett and Beryl Rook (see pic of Ladies). Sarah Wilkinson took Katie’s place in the second match.
The C team have struggled after losing a number of matches at the final part of the event. In the last match, Lynda Baker, Kay Gibbs, Robbie Bacon and Jim Parker lost against Woburn Sands 2-6.
The D team – the Olney Dragons storm on. First to report the men’s match. Max set the tone with a love service game! Max and Stuart could do nothing wrong, the opposition nervous; 1-6 to Olney, first set done and dusted. The second set, perhaps it was the manner of the first set win but the opponents found something, a reckless smashed return that came off and suddenly they were back in the match. Despite a late rally the Pagnell boys pulled off an unlikely second set win, 6-4 to draw the first match.
The ladies match; Ruth and Jill, the perfect blend of styles to baffle a very good Pagnell ladies side. The first set went to Olney, a convincing win 6-2. Then a spirited fight back by the Pagnell girls.
But the experience of Ruth combined with the youthful exuberance of Jill (the young kid on the block!) made sure of the win with a 7-5 result. So Olney were up 3 – 1 at the end of the men’s and Ladies - Jill and Stuart combined to play as the A team, and Ruth and Max as the B team. Jill and Stuart went the distance, the first set went back and forth, first Olney had the upper hand and then Pagnell. Jill stretching at the net and Stuart scampering round the back of the court. The first set went to NP 7-5 after a nail biting tie break. Several games going to deuce multiple times. The second set was a repetition, neither side able to pull away from the other. Again a tie break and again Newport taking it on the tie break! 7-5. So 0-2, how did the B team get on? Well Max and Ruth were sitting in the sunshine having polished their match off 2 sets to nil. 6-3, 6-2. Convincing winners, completely overpowering their opponents with full length tennis, pinning their opponents back and cashing in on wayward serving. A great and match winning performance. Final result Olney Won 5-3 and with one match to go, promotion beckons! (See pics of D team Ladies in action).
