news from Olney Middle School
It haS bEEn another terrific term at Olney Middle school as we continue to combine high-quality creative learning with exciting opportunities for extra-curricular activities. here are just some of the many, many highlights – for more information and events please visit our school website and blogs which are regularly updated.
at 10am on Wednesday 13 June 2012, three hundred and seventy nine children and adults from Olney Middle school took part in a ‘Giant Walking bus’ for the Road Safety Charity ‘brake’. the ‘Giant Walking bus’ is a sponsored walk around the local area, designed to raise money for and awareness of the importance of road safety. More than 100,000 kids took part in simultaneous events across the country and it is hoped that the event will be a new world record for the largest simultaneous walking bus. the children of Olney Middle school raised £646.57 on the day which was a fantastic achievement.
Our parent association FoOMS organised ‘Fun on the field’ on Friday 24th June and despite some typically wet summer weather rain did not stop play and a wonderful evening was enjoyed by all.
during the morning of Monday 11th July, the children in year 3 were joined by members of Olney Lace Circle. the children were given a talk about the history of lace making in Olney and then all of them had a chance to learn how to make lace. the lace makers were marvellous with the children and all the children thoroughly enjoyed making lace. year 3 also enjoyed their tour of Olney, finding out about the rich history and geography of their local area.
Meanwhile, the year 4 children have been learning about rainforests.
the main school corridor has been transformed by some wonderful rainforest displays and the children had a go at making their own mini-rainforests. the children also had a visit from some real rainforest creatures courtesy of Walter and his ‘Edutainment’ event – don’t worry, we made sure all the creatures went back again!
thursday 30th June was a magical day for all the children as we were joined by ‘Mathemagician’ andrew Jeffrey. he wowed the children with a range of marvellous mathematical activities that helped make maths meaningful, accessible and fun.
On tuesday 12th July Olney Middle school welcomed Superschools. all the children had the opportunity to take part in a range of exercises and to have their photograph taken with Olympic athlete and Commonwealth triple Jump Gold medallist Julian Golley. Julian then demonstrated his ability to jump over 17 metres by successfully hop, step and jumping over three members of staff! the morning was a great success and helped raise around £1600 for good causes.
the field was alive with the sound of music on Wednesday 13th July as we held our very own ‘Proms in the park’. nearly 200 children from across the school impressed with their musical prowess and the evening was a huge success. Many thanks from the staff and children to the hundreds of people that attended the evening.
as we come to the end of another successful year, we wish all the year 6 pupils every success as they move up to year 7 and look forward to welcoming the current year 2s in September. We hope everyone has a wonderful summer.
