News from Newton Blossomville School
Once a month at Newton Blossomville School, there is a Parents’ Assembly when parents, friends and grandparents come in to watch the children take an assembly, where they explain with drawings and words what they have been studying.
However, this time the children on the School Council asked if they could bring in their pets! The school agreed and after much careful thought, the Pets Assembly was arranged outside. Parents brought the pets into the school playground and sat down in a line with a wide variety of pets, ranging from the
smallest goldfish (in a jar) to a horse (which actually stayed outside the playground in case its hooves damaged the newly painted playground markings).
The children had prepared drawings and notes which they read out, covering subjects such as how they fed and looked after their pets and how much they loved them. The topic also provided the basis for numeracy work for all age groups, ranging from tally charts to computer generated graphs analysing the number of pets in different categories.
The assembly was such a success with only one parent letting a chicken escape briefly, causing much hilarity as he tried to retrieve it!
The children’s love of animals and nature had been strengthened by their visit to College Lakes Wildlife Centre on a school trip earlier in the summer.
