James Welling: The Mind on Fire
14 September – 25 November
This is the first solo exhibition in a UK public gallery by the American artist James Welling. Comprising around a hundred and thirty works, the exhibition will recreate some of the artistʼs seminal photographic shows from New York in the early to mid 1980s, charting the development of his abstract language and experimentation with photographic effects.

Sheila was nominated as an Olympic Torchbearer for all the dedication, commitment and hard work she has given to Willen Hospice as a Trustee and fundraiser. She has personally raised over £250,000 for Willen Hospice - an outstanding sum of money. Amongst her many fundraising activities, she has taken part in a parachute jump, the Extramile Challenge (2x) and marathons including London (3x), New York and the extreme Everest Challenge. She has also organised golf days, dinner dances and fashion shows. Sheila

The Mind on Fire displays the sense of experimentation of this early period in the artistʼs career. It includes collages, paintings, notes and ephemera related to this early period, all of which culminated in an iconic series of Aluminium Foils. These small-scale silver gelatin prints of minutely crumpled aluminium foil from the restaurant he worked in at the time, offer abstract, minimal images, which have been likened to starry skies or lunar landscapes.
