Newport Pagnell Muster: Marathon Course Unveiled
THIS YEARʼS MUSTER ROUTES
ANCIENT and modern, woodland and water, bird hides and Buddhism, football and fish farming ... those are among an amazing set of local landmarks along the marathon course at this yearʼs Muster walking festival.
until 19th August on the Muster website www.newportmuster.org.uk
Called simply ʻThe Challenge,ʼ only ramblers with proven stamina are expected to enter the 16-mile hike of rare interest across Newport Pagnell, North Bucks and the new city. But what a list of sights they will find on route.
Add-on events will include a mini-exhibition featuring Newport Pagnellʼs years as a garrison town for Parliamentʼs troops during the Civil War in a project supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund.
Picnic - 3 miles
Setting out from Cromwellʼs old garrison town, walk marshal Steve Tearle has plotted a course that includes sections of the Lakes at Willen, Walton and Tongwell, a towpath of the Grand Union Canal and part of the disused railway that used to run to Wolverton.
The Muster is an opportunity for participants to raise money for local charities, organisations or clubs. Entrants can support their own good causes or the organisers are suggesting Willen Hospice as their preferred option. The Hospice provides specialist care for over 400 terminally ill adults each year without any cost to them or their families plus home-visit community nursing and social care teams. Because of the recent difficult economic climate the Hospice has warned that they will not survive without very significant public support.
suitable-for-all stroll around Bury Field, Newportʼs unique area of common land
And thereʼs so much more. Historic spots include a 17th century church with connections to Sir Christopher Wren, and a former 14th century fish farm where bream and perch were bred for sale, while modern interest will focus on the Peace Pagoda beside Willen Lake, a peek into playtime at Gulliverʼs Land, and football talent on the training ground of Milton Keynes Dons FC.
The all-day Muster festival at Newport Pagnell is on Saturday September 8. All routes start from the URC Hall from 10am.
