Local Police Sergeant Damien Isherwood, from Milton Keynes Police Station, raised £4,500 and has helped disabled veterans from
Afghanistan complete a historic expedition marking the 70th anniversary of a WW2 operation to sabotage Hitler’s nuclear programme in Nazi-occupied Norway. Damien assisted disabled veterans during the expedition to honour six Norwegians who parachuted into the Telemark region on skis to blow up the Norsk Hydro plant. The 1943 mission – which inspired the 1965 movie The Heroes Of Telemark, starring Kirk Douglas and Richard Harris – was regarded as the most successful act of sabotage during the war. Seven decades on, a 11-man team on March 26th completed the gruelling two- week expedition retracing the heroes’ journey across the treacherous Hardanger Plateau, with temperatures dropping to –30°C. Among the injured soldiers taking part was Lance-Bombardier Ben Parkinson, the most injured man ever to return from any con ict. The 27-year-old suffered 37 separate injuries, including brain damage and the loss of both legs when his patrol was hit by a landmine in Afghanistan in 2006. Also on the expedition was ri eman Paul Jacobs the rst blind man to return from Afghanistan. The successful expedition saw Ben and Paul becoming the rst double amputee and rst blind person to complete the Hardanger Plateau route. It was organised by Pilgrim Bandits, a Charity set up by Special Forces veterans to push injured soldiers “into physically and mentally demanding situations that they would not have dreamed possible”.
