Dear Editor
Standard of care at MK Hospital
There has been recent criticism of the standard of care of the elderly at MK Hospital with low marks against all criteria. MK claim to have improved on all aspects.
Given that people in general like to criticise medical services, I would like reverse this trend and write in support of MK Hospital.
I am 75 years old and so bordering on elderly. In early March I was unlucky enough to be struck down with severe pneumonia with complications. I was in intensive care at Milton Keynes for about four weeks, mainly sedated. I have no memory of this but I am told by numerous visitors that the care and skill could not be faulted. They undoubtedly saved my life (despite the fact I am approaching my “sell by” date!). Again I have no real memory of going to Hare eld hospital for a specialist procedure to drain my chest but I am told that the standard of care there was also excellent.
Upon my return from Hare eld I spent about a month in Ward 15 at MK Hospital. I do remember from this point onwards and all that I can say is that the staff were brilliant. They were overworked because of the fact that there were not enough of them. They worked long hours but remained cheerful and ef cient. Their tolerance had to be witnessed to be believed. Some of the patients (mainly elderly) needed constant attention and despite the pressures of work, there was always a kind word of reassurance for each and every one. I was greatly impressed and know that I could never match their level of compassion.
Another fact that might surprise is that the food provided is excellent with imaginative meals for most tastes.
The Physiotherapy service at MK and later at WICU (Bletchley) was also excellent and managed to get my wasted muscles and nerves back on the road to recovery. There is a home and outpatient follow up for this. So I am still being looked after.
Now, does this sound like a service that does not look after their elderly? My experience is that the NHS in this area does look after its senior citizens. I can only speak as I have found and I have found skill, caring, dedication and cheerfulness. I rest my case!
My letter was really about MK Hospital but I must also thank WICU (Windsor Intermediate Care Unit) who looked after me so well.
Gratefully, Ron Bull
Dear Editor
My May Bank Holiday “Open House” weekend held in aid of WSPA (World Society for the Protection of Animals) was a great success and raised a total of £410.
Thanks to the lovely weather 50 people turned up. Many thanks to them, the people who helped in any way and to those who sent donations. WSPA has made an enormous difference to the lives of so many animals and are working with more governments to roll out mass dog vaccinations and end the cruel culling of dogs in the name of rabies.
They have also rallied against a mega-dairy application in Wales and helped save ten bears from the blood sport of bear baiting as well as many other good causes for animals throughout the world.
Yours sincerely
Joan Norton
