Out and About with Mark Lancaster
Our local MP
As James Wharton’s Private Members Bill is presented to the house, the debate surrounding our relationship with the European Union has never been as prevalent.
I have always considered myself to be an ardent euro sceptic, like most people I want to get back to the Common Market arrangement that we thought we were getting when we rst joined in the 1970s.
Having a free trade zone is good for our businesses but I am opposed to the Euro and many of the other intrusions into UK domestic matters being made by the EU.
With over 60% of our laws now being made in Brussels and as a result of that parliamentary sovereignty eroding away, it is time that we, the British public, were give a chance to have our say on our membership of the European Union.
It is for those reasons that as the Conservative Party has published a draft bill to legislate for a referendum before the end of 2017 and will be debated on the 5th July in Parliament that I will be voting for a referendum.
Like our relationship with the European Union, Wind farms can also be an emotive topic. Thankfully, it appears that the government has sided with local communities as Eric Pickles announced that development would only go ahead with local support.
Now don’t misunderstand my commitment to nding and maintaining sustainable source of energy, it is absolute. However, I fully appreciate why so many have expressed concerns locally when energy rms have pushed plans upon our community for large wind turbines with little regard to the correct positioning of them.
This new policy will give local communities a proper voice in such developments and will stop inappropriate development coming forward. I am con dent that the government will now pursue more sensible and energy ef cient sources of renewable energy such as tidal and off shore wind.
I recently celebrated the 20th year of Milton Keynes Mobility being in business.
Many of you will know of Milton Keynes Mobility which is also known as Carver Care, which originally opened a shop on Newport Pagnell High Street 20 years ago and is still open.
During the past 20 years the local business has expanded and now has other shops in Bletchley, Luton and Winchester offering personal advice to those who need help in keeping mobile at home.
It is always good to see local businesses thriving but with such a care focussed approach Milton Keynes Mobility have helped our community phenomenally. I am delighted to have been able to celebrate their success and I have no doubt they will continue to prosper. There is certainly always a friendly face in there so do pop in if you’re on the High Street and curious.
Olney Infant School recently held an exhibition of the children’s work from the “Take One Picture” scheme. In conjunction with The National Gallery, the children produce pictures inspired by one of the paintings. This year’s picture was “Bathers at Anieres” by Seurat and I was very impressed by the drawings done by the children.
I also recently attended the opening of the North Crawley Cricket Nets. With support from the National Lottery Fund, the nets are now the pride of the village based on the village green. With the Olympics only 10 months ago and the Ashes test about to begin I was delighted to see so many youngsters enjoying the new nets and more importantly, the sport! As ever, if I can help you in any way do get in touch on 01908 686830.
