Who’d have thought it!

Ron, the publication in your June issue of Tom Garner’s WW1 letters and in particular the photograph of Garner and Mann family members on Olney Station in 1915 prompted a very unexpected and surprising response. After reading the article, Gerald Mann pointed out to us that the young soldier on the right of the photograph was probably his father, Clarence Mann, rather than Tom Garner. The Mann and Garner families have subsequently agreed that it is Clarence Mann, who volunteered for the Royal Army Medical Corp and served in the German East Africa Campaign. However, there are still uncertainties regarding the identities of the ladies in the photograph.
Naturally, since the Garner family have had the photograph in their possession for many decades, they were firmly of the opinion that it was Tom Garner. On the other hand, the Mann family had never seen this
photograph, even though Clarence’s brother, Frank Mann, married Tom Garner’s sister Connie a little later in 1921.
So, on the down side, an apology is owed to your readers for any confusion caused, but on the upside, the Mann family now have a copy of this important photograph to add to their family archive.
