Cabaret Night
The Queen’s Baton
Avrill Forster
Ron, your readers may be interested to know that Julia Simpson [nee Forster] from Newport Pagnell, who now lives in West Lothian Scotland, was fortunate enough to be selected as a Clydesider at the Commonwealth games in Glasgow. Since moving to Livingston, where she now lives with her husband David and son Angus, Julia has been active in the local community and because of this was nominated by her sister in law to run with the Queen’s Baton. She was surprised and delighted to be chosen and ran with the baton on Sunday 15th June. Julia was born in Newport and has a brother Vincent, who still lives in the town and a sister living in London, she went to Portfields school and Ousedale. She worked in Milton Keynes before moving to Scotland nearly 10 years ago.
The third Cabaret Night in aid of Willen Hospice and organised by residents of Ravenstone played to a packed house at the Carlton House Club, Olney on 28th March.
The evening was hosted superbly by Mark (Elvis) Goddard,
who also sang many popular Elvis songs. Then we heard the fantastic vocal tones of Lee Small followed by 70s Mud2 who had everyone dancing in their ‘Tigerfeet’! Next, by popular demand the wonderful Hellzabopppin with the amazing 8 piece jump jive talent. Allessa came all the way from Cyprus to give an international mood to the evening.
A big thank you to Nathan Veeder (Janosh Sound) who provided the sound and engineering for the night. Thanks also to Dave Hoyland from Olney Bowling Club for transporting all the musical equipment to the club and also making sure the club was well represented by selling 48 tickets. A special thank you to Chris Savage who put everything into making the evening such a success as well as organising the printing of the programmes.
Ravenstone and Stoke Goldington deserve special mention too for contributing so many wonderful raffle prizes. Thank you to Mike Knox for the accounting, Annie Macgowan for creating the wonderful baskets, Debbie Edgar and Julia from Stepping Stones who sold at least 30 tickets.
All the performers gave their time free and helped to raise a fantastic £5265.
The evening ended with “Oh, When the Saints Go Marching In” in memory of Keith Miller.
Watch out for the fourth Cabaret Night which promises to be bigger and better than ever. Margaret Miller
