You’ll have probably heard about them in relation to hosting the World Cup, but what else do you know about Brazil? We’ve put together some top facts about the country, to keep you entertained and informed as you enjoy the rest of the World Cup.

Summer Bytes Festival

if your offspring show any sort of interest in computing there is a digital honey-pot on your doorstep this summer.
The National Museum of Computing at Bletchley Park is running a Summer Bytes Festival everyday from 11am to 5pm, running from 26 July until 2 September, 2014.
There are lots of activities, fun and games and competitions for young people – all designed to release their creativity with technology. LEGO EV3 robots, Minecraft, Raspberry Pi and FUZE will all be there for people to try, and there will be quite a few surprises on specific days.
From 8-12 August, there will be a focus on special effects when youngsters will be able to teeter on the edge of a black hole, and at the weekend everyone can see the pre-computing special effects
• The name ‘Brazil’ comes from ‘brazil wood’, which was the name of a tree that was once plentiful along the Brazilian coast.
• Brazil is the largest country in both the South America and Latin America regions, and is the fifth largest country in the world.
• The official language of Brazil is Portuguese.
• A lot of Brazil’s culture comes from Portuguese because of its strong ties with the Portuguese empire.
• The music of Brazil is mainly made up of European
and African elements.
• The main sport in Brazil is (fittingly) football.
• There are 2,500 airports in Brazil.
Food facts:
• ‘Feijoada’ is considered Brazil’s national dish, and mainly consists of beans with fresh pork or beef, and at least two types of smoked sausage and jerked beef.
• Fried food is very popular in Brazil, including potatoes, cassava (a type of root and good source of carbohydrate), banana, meat and cheese.
• The national beverage of Brazil is coffee, with cachaça, which is distilled from sugar cane, the national liquor.
• The main ingredient in Brazil’s national cocktail is
called caipirinha.
Exterminate!
Village is under attack
Hanslope will be in grave danger on Sunday, July 13, as the darkest monsters in the universe descend on the village.
With cries of exterminate! Daleks will be making an appearance at the Smallspace sci-fi model show, which returns to Hanslope Village Hall. The Doctor Who baddies will be back, alongside Cybermen, K9 and Stormtroopers. The third show of all things space, sci-fi and fantasy costs £2 for adults, and children under 16 go free.
