Veterans and budding stars
Comedy, in many ways, is like good cake. It can come in many different flavours, and most of us are happy to have a slice. And
that’s exactly what the circuit is offering this month, with a wealth of new and returning comedians.
Jimmy Car and John Bishop (limited tickets available), perform at Northampton’s Royal & Derngate on the 5th and 27th respectively. Across the border in Bedfordshire, Mock The Week comedian Simon Evans will perform at the Corn Exchange (5th), while the venue’s monthly comedy night is on the 26th.
The Queen of British comedy, Dawn French is holding a three-day residency at MK Theatre as part of her first ever solo tour, 30 Million Minutes (17th-19th). The award-winning actress and best-selling novelist speaks about her life and career, and the audience can expect to hear all about her misguided attempts to become a fully functioning adult. Other comedians on the Milton Keynes stage include Jethro on the 11th and Jonathan Creek’s Alan Davies on the 28th. The Stables will host a range of veteran performers, including Pam Ayres (11th and 12th), Ruby Wax (16th) and Jason Manford (21st), with the latter’s comedy club being held at The Crauford Arms on the 25th.
Lastly, in Newport Pagnell, Eric’s Tales of the Sea is being performed at The Cannon on the 7th.
Autumn seasons kick off with tributes and multimedia performances
The festivals may well and truly be over for another summer, but that doesn’t mean that venues across the country aren’t packed with performers making their mark. Northampton’s Royal & Derngate welcomes Lisa Stansfield on the 9th (limited tickets), while The Illegal Eagles will perform their tribute to The Eagles at MK Theatre on the 12th. Moving away to Wolverton, The Crauford Arms hosts Black Sabbath tribute Snowblind on the 5th, and the following day 101% Pantera, an act dedicated to reproducing the live energy of a Pantera show, descend on the music venue.
Milton Keynes’ own power trio, The AKA, take to the stage on the 12th. Other performances include Naam on the 15th,
Swoons (19th) and Madball (27th).
The Stables’ autumn seasons kicks off with Bellowhead’s Sam Sweeney putting on Made in the Great War on the 5th, a multimedia performance telling the story of a fiddle which took nearly 100 years to complete. Julian Smith’s distinctive soprano saxophone sound will fill the venue on the 13th, while Nick Kershaw will celebrate the 30th anniversary of his first chart success with a performance the following day.
Georgie Fame will be there on the 15th, with Kaz Hawkins on the 17th, The Cavern Beatles on the 18th, Gary Potter on the 28th and Sophie Ellis Bexter on the 29th. The Pad Presents Hawkwind at Bedford Corn Exchange on the 30th.
