and though not back among them he was in renewed connection with his family. Conscience had quickly swept me back to the chap in the cardboard box. “Yes please” he would like a drink and a chat. Living alone he had tried his hand in a tele-sales position offering excellent commissions (only) to the successful operators. The failure in such a group soon becomes a nuisance and he had soon been asked to leave. In truth he had no aptitude whatsoever for such employment; he nodded quietly when I told him that I would certainly not have taken him on if I had been running that office. I walked (dragged) him into the job centre next morning, from there he was popped into digs which gave him prompt benefit of some kind of fixed address, within days he had work albeit of a fairly menial nature and now admits to feeling better just because someone bothered to listen to him.
We don’t always succeed when we try to help, some alas are just determined takers who bite the hand that feeds them but overall the success which does come along makes the effort well worth while, I’ve come to know some very talented people.
Money tossed into collection boxes achieves just about nothing, indeed much of it lines the pockets of people with more wit than principle; I’ll probably have more to say about quasi charities another time.
With the approach of Christmas may we please
all give thought and watch out for people with no one even to chat along with. They may need money but most of all they need human contact. If we can each find and help just one back from the fringe we may truly deserve a happy Christmas.
