What motivates you?
In his book ‘Paradoxology’ Krish Kandia speaks about the tension of grace and obedience: “A student in a hostile debate setting asked me why we should bother trying to change our behaviour, if the God I had been describing was so loving and compassionate. I was encouraged.
“I felt that I must have communicated something if antagonistic atheists were asking these questions. I explained using an illustration about my grandmother. She was a lovely and gracious old lady and I am sure loved me unconditionally. I am pretty sure that she would have found it in her heart to forgive me, whatever I did. But, knowing her character and her depth of graciousness, what should my response be? Should I deliberately punch her in the face, just to make the most of her forgiveness? Should I carry on playing my music loudly, even though I knew it upset her? Of course not. The only fitting response to this kind of love is to give love in return. The appropriate response to God’s forgiveness is love towards him and forgiveness towards everyone else. The grace of God is not an excuse to take advantage of him, but a motivation to live a life of worship worthy of the calling we have received.” What about you? Brilliant... true... challenging.
