Olney Camera Club
Competition Time
Olney Camera Club has an in-house image competition four times a year where members
can enter their photographs and have them assessed by a qualified judge. Obviously everyone would like to win in these competitions, but the critique of an unbiased judge gives an insight into how to improve one’s images. We all need to step back from our pictures and see them through the eyes of someone who understands the difference between a good and a great picture. We may not all be winners but we can all improve on our techniques of taking and editing our pictures. The pictures shown are the winners of our last competition, together with some of the judge’s comments. There were four categories.
The winner of the “Numbers” category was Lisa Winson, with “Come on no. 1”. The judge commented: The picture was a well thought out idea including plenty of references to the category title. The picture gave the idea of movement by using a slow shutter speed that blurred the racing dogs. There were some small areas of light in the picture that were slightly distracting and the picture could be improved by removing them during editing.
The winner of the “Rocks” category was Andy Gailer with “Castle Stalker”. The judge said: A fairly good dramatic sky. There is a good lead into the picture by the rocks. There are no distractions from the focus of the picture, but the castle is central, which is usually not the best option for a great picture, but works well in this case. This image was also chosen by the judge as Image of the Evening.
“Vroom” was the winner of the “Open” category, by Roy Bird. Judge’s comments: Creative use of movement blur. The areas of white especially at the edges could be toned down as they are rather distracting. An imaginative and well conceived picture.
The “Barbara Aggett Landscape Competition” was won by Andy Gailer with “Kimmeridge Bay”. Judge said: Beautifully captured light. It is 28 Phonebox Magazine

unfortunate there are aeroplane trails, but they have been used well to enhance the picture. Very well executed, with great composition. The long flat ridge of rock leads the eye into the picture.
