A Flavour of Life in Sierra Leone
As the Annual Meeting of the Olney-Newton Link comes into view we get a chance to look back and assess what we have achieved with our efforts to help the small community of Newton in Sierra Leone. Obviously I hope
that as many of you as possible will come along to the meeting which this year will be held in the new Gravett Hall at Sutcliff Baptist Church on Wednesday May 11th. At this meeting my husband and I will try to give you a avour of what life is like for Saloneans today in post-ebola Sierra Leone. The particular emphasis will be on the way they cope without things that we count as basic necessities such as a reliable electricity and water supply, building supplies and machinery etc. It will make you smile and make you think!
The pre-school construction is well underway on this project but a lack of skilled workers has meant that it is slower than we had hoped. The walls are almost at roof height as it is very important that a roof is in place before the rains start in June. The aim is to open in September.
The next project we need to undertake is the construction of a water well to serve the pre-school and the ‘Olney UK Technical Institute’. The latter is the new name for what we all knew as the Skills Training Centre, a very successful project indeed as you will learn if you receive our newsletter and, of course, join us on May 11th. A well was partially dug before the ebola emergency but now needs completing. Imagine trying to run a pre-school with no water supply or mains electricity? We can’t do much about the leccy but we can supply a well for clean water.
Please continue to support us. If you would like further information please refer to our website olneynewtonlink.org.uk.
