Beatrix Potter’s 1905 book The Tale of Mrs Tiggy-Winkle remains as popular as ever and is one reason why hedgehogs are so well liked.
However, the hedgehog population is in serious decline. Britain had roughly 30 million hedgehogs in the 1950s but by 1995 there were only 1.5 million left and their numbers are thought to have declined signi cantly since then, falling by a third in urban areas and a half in rural areas.
Much of the blame for the decrease in the population of hedgehogs has been attributed to the increase in population of badgers. However, there are many other factors such as slug pellets, pesticides, enclosed gardens which prevent hedgehogs roaming for food, netting and rubbish such as polystyrene cups and elastic bands left lying around.
However, there are many things that can be done to help the hedgehog population to grow. Recent Government guidelines have
suggested allowing patches of the garden to grow wild and using piles of logs and compost to provide shelter in the colder months. One man who is full of ideas is author, broadcaster and all round hedgehog expert Hugh Warwick (http://urchin.info/home).
A hugely entertaining speaker, Hugh will be the guest of Turvey Bloomers at a session which is open to all and which will take place in Turvey Village Hall on Saturday 14th May at 3 pm. Entrance is £3 per adult and free for accompanied children.
