Civil War Weekend
Receives Lottery Boost
Plans to recreate Newport Pagnell’s role in the English Civil War have received another boost with the award of a £9,700 Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) grant so local schoolchildren can experience life in the 17th century.
The grant will help support a spectacular free event over the August Bank Holiday this year when hundreds of re-enactors will stage battles on Bury Field Common, Newport Pagnell. It follows the grants already pledged by the Milton Keynes Community Foundation, Milton Keynes Borough Council, Newport Pagnell Town Council and the Bury Field Commoners Association.
Plans for the Civil War Weekend on 28th and 29th August are well advanced. On board is The English Civil War Society (ECWS) which is bringing along hundreds of its members dressed as pike men, musketeers, cavalry and artillery as well as women and children in period costume within a Living History village. The Newport Pagnell event is one of the biggest in the ECWS’ 2016 calendar.
Richard Meredith, chairman of the Newport Pagnell Civil War Weekend committee, said: ‘The HLF award is another landmark on our journey to bring the story of Newport Pagnell in the Civil War to life and we are very grateful for their support. Our aim is to present an entertaining and informative event that will generate a new interest in the role the town played in the civil war, to create a community spirit and leave a legacy for educational study in the future.’
Co-chairman Geoff Morris is leading the educational project around the event that is being supported by the HLF grant. He said: ‘As well as the Living History village during the August events, up to seven Civil War ‘camps’ will be set up on a local Primary School playing eld

in September. They will be visited by around 800 local Primary and Secondary school children for a more learning-focussed experience. ‘Each child will be able to learn about 17th century life in Newport Pagnell and take part in child-friendly and safe musket and pike drill. They will nd out how a soldier lived in the town’s garrison and about the market traders and merchants of the period,’ he said.
More information including details of some key educational activities involving local schools will be released throughout the summer.
