Olney-based charity Advantage Africa continues to take on difficult causes and help neglected groups of people in
East Africa. Their most recent projects include farming for single parent families, preventing disabled people from being sexually abused and work among people with albinism. Their Uganda Programme Manager Jane Betts says that without melanin to protect them from the suns rays, 98% of albinos in Africa die from skin cancer before they reach 40 years. Advantage Africa’ albinism project includes education about the condition alongside hats and sunscreen to prevent such needless deaths and Uganda’s rst ever cryotherapy service to remove carcinomas from people with albinism.
Jane is passionate about this work and after returning from Uganda in February she set herself a goal. She bought some trainers and determined to raise as much money as she could to improve the lives of such vulnerable people by running not one, but TWO marathons in as many weeks for Advantage Africa. Jane’s no natural athlete and her busy life means it’s been hard to nd time to train so she admits ‘it’s a bit bonkers’

but says, ‘I think I’ve done enough to get me through’.
By the time this edition goes out Jane should have nished the London Marathon and will be contemplating 26.2 rather less glamorous miles in Halstead, Essex. She hopes that the support of sponsors towards the people and projects she loves in Uganda will give her the mental strength to complete the challenge. Most importantly, it will help children and adults
facing the double disadvantage of poverty and discrimination to build a better future for their families and communities.
