Turvey Lower School
Healthy Living is Fun!
The children of Turvey Lower School have had a fantastic time celebrating Healthy Living Week. The week kicked off with the children scaling a nine metre climbing wall. All the children showed real teamwork, encouraging each other to
climb the wall, and the staff were impressed by their perseverance to keep climbing beyond their comfort zone, so that they reached the top ... for some it must have felt like climbing Everest!
During the week, the children were given a presentation on sun safety and its importance and each received their own sunscreen pack – let’s hope they will get the chance to use it! They also received a lesson in yoga and took part in different age-related activities which were designed to support their emotional wellbeing.
Our Seahorses, in particular, had a fun and creative afternoon making dream-catchers, to hang up in their bedrooms at home. The week ended with a trip to Irchester Country Park, where the children got to
Olney RFC
ONew Season, New Coaching Team
lney RFC has announced its new look coaching team for next season, bringing in two specialist coaches with big ambitions for the Buckinghamshire club. Phil Powell takes up the Head Coach position, and Edd Rhodes becomes
Assistant Coach.
Phil Powell, 29, is a Level 3 Coach and has recently worked with Northampton Saints Junior Academy, the Developing Player Programme and the U18s. He worked with Bedford Blues academy, is part of the senior coaching team with Bucks county rugby, and has been appointed head coach for the East Midlands U18 side.
Phil said: “I am delighted at being appointed Head Coach of Olney rugby club. It was an easy decision to move to a club that relishes success on the pitch but also remains a family centred club with huge support from the local community. I want to make Olney RFC the most dominant team in Buckinghamshire and a force to be reckoned with in the East Midlands.”
Edd Rhodes, 25, started playing rugby at Olney at the age of 10, and was a semi-professional player at Hull Ionians before a heart condition led to his retirement in 2012. Since then he has focused on coaching, working for the Northampton Saints Elite Player Development Group and coaching Olney’s U17s to the National Cup semi-finals and the Olney Colts to the finals of the Oceanic Cup. He is Director of Rugby at Samuel Whitbread Academy and is working towards his Level 3 coaching qualification.
Edd said: “There are many young players with huge potential at Olney. We are in a good position to develop them and build a very strong squad which I believe can achieve promotion to a higher league.” Director of Rugby at Olney Rugby Club, John Robinson, said: “It’s fantastic to welcome Phil and Edd to Olney; their skills and experience are going to have a huge impact across the entire senior section of the club. It’s a great time to be involved with Olney RFC and we welcome any new players to join us for pre-season training.”
Pre-season training at Olney RFC started on Tuesday 28 June.

You may remember that back in the May edition of Phonebox magazine, we reported that Lucy Attwood was called up to play for England U18 team. Well Lucy, who lives in Olney and attends Ousedale school, has now been named in the England U20 Ladies rugby squad to face Canada in a series of August international games.
Lucy is captain of Olney U18 Girls team, playing at fly half and centre. In the previous England U18 girls game they beat Canada 41-17. Lucy was one of the original players who helped form Olney Rugby Club’s girls squad four years ago.
