TDisappointing start to the season
he FA Cup provided a disappointing start to the season, good attacking moves. The sharpness of the rst twenty minutes with a 1-0 home defeat against Biggleswade United. With was lacking in the second half and they didn’t make the most of eight rst team players missing and manager and Darren the few scoring chances that they did create, but with some very Lynch having to play the full ninety minutes despite not capable defending against an Oadby team that offered little attacking
having played for three years, it was always going to be a dif cult threat the result was never in doubt. Despite the rather lacklustre
day for the home team. Overall it was a brave performance that came close to earning a replay, but was decided by one defensive error, a weak back pass which goalkeeper Mark Osbourn did well to reach but could only clear to a Biggleswade player who calmly lobbed the ball into the net.
Their rst scheduled league match, which should have been only three days after the FA Cup defeat, was postponed because the opponents, Northampton ON Chenecks, had an FA Cup reply, so Newport had a week after the FA Cup match for players to recover from injuries and return from absences.
With almost a full squad available again, the rst league match produced a better result, a comfortable 2-0 home win over Oadby Town, with goals by Adam Pryke and Darryl Smith. Newport subjected Oadby to sustained pressure for the rst twenty minutes, during which they scored two goals and could have scored more. However, supporters hoping to see more goals were disappointed, as Newport’s players seemed to ease off after the second goal. They looked hesitant at times and took unnecessary extra touches that allowed Oadby more time to close down space and make it more dif cult to set up
performance in the second half there is plenty of cause for optimism about the season. The Newport Pagnell players showed in the rst twenty minutes that they can play the sort of football that is needed to challenge at the top of the table and it is only a fairly small step to sustaining that form for the full ninety minutes when they need to do so against the better teams.
The Reserves started their UCL Reserve Division campaign with two away defeats, 4-1 at Desborough Town and 3-1 at Rothwell Corinthians, but then earned their rst point with a 1-1 draw away in the local derby against Olney Town Reserves. As a newly formed squad it will inevitably take a little time for them to settle down as a team, and they will be hoping for improved results in the next few weeks.
