This valuable asset to the town, based in the Olney Centre, off ers young people a safe and warm place to go once a week to play, chat and perhaps do some homework.Local MP Chris Curtis was there for its offi cial opening with Mayor Debbie Whitworth, and I couldn%u2019t help wondering if the %u2018warm%u2019 aspect of the new Hub, as far as our local children are concerned, had resonated with him. Especially as we move ever closer towards winter. I say this because Chris was one of the MPs who voted recently to remove the Winter Heating Allowance given to another section of our society %u2013 pensioners, the older people living in our towns and villages. It%u2019s a decision that has not gone down well with residents %u2013 indeed more than one reader wrote to us about it, see letters, page 10.It%u2019s not just the approaching cold weather that makes us realise that the shorter days, longer nights and the end of 2024 are just around the corner. Our entertainments section (p 12) previews a pantomime coming to Northampton and it%u2019s one of many that will be showing this festive season in our region. And further on in the magazine (p 32) you%u2019ll fi nd another seasonal occurrence, Halloween, previewed with our round up of all the local %u2018Fright Night%u2019 events happening near us.The Foodie page (p 34), meanwhile, has a recipe for a creepy burger while our regular Quiz Corner (p 62) also gives a ghoulish nod to All Hallows Eve.Good, fun stuff to look forward to then, and I wish our readers a safe and happy next few weeks of Halloween, through Bonfi re Night before moving on then towards Christmas. Enjoy %u2013 and just try to stay warm%u2026On a personal note, I was very sorry to hear of the passing of our dear friend Bill Bethune, husband of Councillor Deirdre Bethune. Although long retired he was well known as an architect in the town. He was instrumental in the design of the Olney Centre as we now know it and many other projects around Olney. We send our deepest condolences to Deirdre and all her family and friends.Ron Hall, Editor06 New book released First novel for Newport man 08 Olney Camera Club The sky is the limit 10 Readers LettersHave your say, it%u2019s your magazine 12 Panto is back in townAndy Day loves this time of year 14 Four SeasonsGareth Gates hits the stage16 Mercury Olney%u2019s regular Town Council meeting 18 Newport Pagnell Council NewsThe latest from Newport%u2019s councillors 22 Olney Ward CouncillorsThe latest reports from our MK team 24 Newport Pagnell & Olney Lions ClubNews from the charitable group26 Phonebox Diary What%u2019s on and where from our local clubs and societies28 Pibworth ColumnDeveloping an interest in developers 30 Chris Curtis MPLocal MP speaks 32 Halloween timeLooking for a fright? 36 Phonebox FoodieScary burgers39 BOFF round up Pictures from the food festival 40 Churches together Olney and Newport Pagnell Churches 42 Phonebox Gardening Patio time 46 Phonebox MotoringSwift on the scene 48 Club of the Month Wolverton%u2019s Gilbert & Sullivan Society50 Olney Ukraine News Support for those in Ukraine51 Cowper & Newton MuseumDance group steps back in time51 Local RadioCRMK on the airwaves52 Book Review One August Night54 Sports roundup Fishing trophy winner56 In Brief Lots more local news 62 Quiz Corner A frightener this month
