The highlight of the last month was the derby game between the Ladies B and C teams. A fiercely contested match was finally won by the B team 5-3. The difference was the unbeatable pair of Sarah Wilkinson and Lynda Baker who with Margaret Currie and Anne Bacon were just too strong for Jill Bradford, Ruth Ayling, Lynn Quennell and Mandy Elliott.
The Mens C played a blinder against Winslow with last set heroics by Nick Hardy and Paul Norbury securing a good draw after good efforts by Malcom Donne and Brian Worsfold.
The Mens B lost their first match of the season away against a good David Lloyd side 3-5 despite good efforts by Les Folds, Phil Bennett, Chris Wright and Simon Barter. The Mixed B lost 3-5 against David Lloyd C with the main difference being DL having a Steffi Graf standard lady who tonked the ball past all of us! Our team was Phil Bennett, Sophie Isherwood and Simon Barter. Olney mens Aegon team maintained being unbeaten at home record against a strong Aylesbury team. Nigel Willard beat Chris Adam 6-3-6-0 and Gavin Fowell beat Krishna Chintamreddy 6-1 6-1. Olney’s Joe Williams fought hard but lost in two sets and it was left to #1 Dan Cornwell to beat Adam Goodman the Aylesbury captain in the crucial match. Dan won so leaving Olney 3-1 up in the singles. Willard teamed up with Cornwell to win the doubles 6-3 6-1 and Fowell/Williams won a match tie break to make the overall score 5-1 to the Olney team.
This team then played one of Bucks’ powerhouse club, Gerrards Cross, in their latest match. A boiling hot afternoon and some boiling hot tennis. Oliver Parker making his club debut started the tie losing 1-6 0-6 to James Cairns rated 2 divisions higher. Gavin Fowell did his usual job of overpowering his opponent taking the match 6-0 6-1 to tie the scores. In a crucial match Dan Cornwell/Nigel Willard beat the GX pair of Smith/Elber 7-5 6-2 to take the tie to 2-1 to Olney at half way. Cornwell who has been unwell all week lost 2-6 4-6 to GX captain Tom Smith whilst Parker/Fowell won against Cairns/Buckeldee 6-2 6-1 in another crucial doubles win. It was left to skipper Willard to outplay Johnny Elber 6-2 6-1 to give the 88 Phonebox Magazine
Olney team an 8-4 and move to the top of the table. Our final match is at home against Great Missenden.
The Ladies A won again this time against Winslow 6-2 thanks to strong play by Eleanor Carter, Cindy Parker, Katie Bennett and Gill Hogston.
The Mens’ Bucks team enjoyed a comprehensive 14-4 win against Burnham thanks to Andrew Lawson, Stephen Bateson, Chris Wright, Phil Bennett, Paul Wheeler and Nick Harris. They then had to face the league leaders from GX Gerrards Cross who had annihilated everyone so far. However Olney gained a great draw and are now in third place thanks to Phil Anderson, Simon Barter, Chris Wright, Stephen Bateson, Ian Dunkley and Freddie Guilmard.
