Carlton Lower School
Raising the Rafters
For the last three years Carlton VC Lower School has participated in the Olney raft race and this has now become an important feature
on our fundraising calendar. Not only is it great fun but it is the one fundraising event that really can involve all the family. The children have even helped decorate the raft. The highlight of the race has to be watching them run the full length of the course shouting ‘Carlton, Carlton’! Can there be a prize for best / loudest supporters?
This year we braved the high seas in our HMS Victory inspired raft. Having defeated the French and the Spanish our biggest battle was still to come – The Harrold Goes Hollywood Raft. Armed with nothing more than water pistols and the raft’s dog, battle commenced. Not even Admiral Nelson could take on the might of Batman, Jack Sparrow, Cleopatra and friends who, with their pre- race entertainment, pipped us to the coveted title of “Most Entertaining Raft”. Really well done to them and everyone who took part. We now consider the raft race to be one of our key fundraisers, raising over £3,000 for the School, thanks to the generosity and support of local sponsors and this year was no different.
Your help makes a terrific difference to the School and the additional educational resources it provides. Massive thanks also to Emmaus, Carlton, for donating most of our outfits and to Hannah and Will Tongue and Colin Fletcher for building a raft that Nelson himself would have been proud of! Also to our crew who rowed (and fired water cannons)
Great War Remembrance
The First World War brought immeasurable tragedy to families across the UK, who lost their sons, husbands and fathers to the trenches.
Here, we will publish the names of the fallen, from our
local war memorials, exactly 100 years ago to the month.
Having worked with the Royal British Legion, we have the names of the men, alongside their unit and rank, below.
so heroically: Colin Fletcher, Hannah & Will Tongue, Andy Price, Alex Uncles, Liz Welsh and our own Carlton Lower School teacher Miss Noble. And last, but by no means least, thank you to everyone involved in organising the race. Without you we wouldn’t have this fantastic fundraising opportunity. We can’t wait for next year!
