Newport Pagnell Town Football Club
Newport Pagnell Town served up a real treat in their first competitive home match of the season, with an impressive 6-2 win over
Holmer Green in the Extra Preliminary Round of the FA Cup. They looked the better team from the start, but it took 24 minutes to get the breakthrough against their South Midlands League Premier Division opponents, with a goal from Josh Crawley. The same player added a second only two minutes later and then gave Newport complete control of the match in the 33rd minute when he coolly lobbed the ball over the advancing Holmer Green goalkeeper to complete his hat trick within 10 minutes. Early in the second half Sam O’Neill made it 4-0 with a perfectly placed free kick. Some careless defending allowed the visitors to score after 60 minutes, but with a little under 20 minutes left Newport added two more goals in three minutes, when Fazil Koriya finished off a good move down the left and then Josh Crawley added his fourth from the penalty spot. Another casual piece of defending allowed Holmer Green a second goal ten minutes from the end, but the match was all over by then.
Newport Pagnell will now have a home match against AFC Dunstable in the next round of the FA Cup, on 29th August.
The United Counties League Premier Division season opened with close results in two away matches, a 3-2 defeat at
Wisbech and a 4-3 win at Wellingborough. The Newport Pagnell manager, Darren Lynch, commented after the FA Cup match that the team are giving away too many bad goals but that he is pleased that they are scoring so many. He felt they were unlucky to lose at Wisbech. Players are getting used to positional changes and a different formation, but he is confident that they will adjust quickly and have a good season. The squad has been hit by a series of injuries in pre-season matches. Newly signed forward Russell Dunkley suffered a broken leg in the pre-season match away at
Daventry and then the experienced central defender and team captain, John Thorpe, broke a collar bone in the final pre-season match and is not expected to play again until at least the middle of September. September starts with the enticing prospect of a local derby at home to Kempston Rovers in the FA Vase on 5th September. It will give added interest to the match that Dom Lawless, Newport Pagnell Town’s top scorer last season, who left in the summer to go to Rushden & Diamonds, has now moved on to Kempston, where he joins another ex-Newport Player, Vinnie Shreeves.
