The School Run
The children should be adjusting to life in their new class or school and we have all had a chance to mourn the loss of summer. The nights are
now drawing in, the leaves are falling from the trees and it’s time to dig out your jumpers and boots and get ready for autumn. Halloween falls in the half term break this year so it’s the perfect reason to dress up, bake cakes and have a party.
Shops will be stacked to the rafters with cheap Halloween costumes, tableware and decorations so it’s relatively inexpensive to create a “spooky” setting for your party. Children love to go trick or treating and Halloween is fun for many but some people do not like to participate so only visit houses with obvious Halloween decorations outside and be always take care around candles and pumpkins especially in fancy dress!
Here are some simple tips to make your party fabulously freaky:
Have some easy Halloween crafts for younger guests, cut out simple bat or spider shapes from black card and supply glue, glitter and sprinkles to decorate. There are lots more great party ideas at celebrations.com Decorate a pumpkin by drawing a stencil (or download free designs online), once you’ve hollowed your pumpkin you need to attach the stencil and use a cocktail stick to poke holes around the shape. Remove the stencil and carve out your design. Add a tea light and you’re good to go (make a hole in the top of your pumpkin to allow heat to escape

and the lid won’t catch fire).
Make meringue “ghosts” - using homemade or shop brought meringues, make little holes for eyes and a mouth with a cocktail stick, fill with black food colouring for a simple treat. For the visiting trick or treaters you can create “bat” lollies by cutting out simple shapes and poking a lolly through, use a cardboard box for display.
There are lots of “out and about” activities during half term too:
Milton Keynes Museum hosts five days of holiday activities geared to young visitors. From 26-30 October there’ll be demonstrations, displays, and dozens of fun things to do as the Museum does its bit to occupy young and old while school is out.
