Newport Pagnell Town Football Club
ARaise the Roof
t the start of the new season a major off the eld priority for the club is its recently launched Raise the Roof campaign to raise funds for replacement of the clubhouse roof.
For over 50 years the clubhouse and bar at Willen Road
sports ground has become far more than just a changing room for Newport Pagnell Town FC Adult, Youth and Cricket teams as well as MK Dons Ladies football team.
It is a community facility much used by various groups and of course people who call in for a drink and a chat.
Under this roof are also function facilities which are booked out almost every weekend for all types of events including christenings, wakes, wedding receptions, birthday and anniversary parties as well as regular quiz nights, discos and live bands, with hopefully many more to come. There are probably very few people locally and around Milton Keynes that over the years haven’t been to an event at the club. None of these great times will happen without a roof!
Throughout its years the roof has been regularly maintained but now it is beyond repair so needs urgently replacing. The rst fundraising event being organised is a golf tournament day with a BBQ and evening disco on the 28th August. Look out on facebook, twitter and locally for all details of our fundraising events and activities and how you can be involved.
Meanwhile, club members have been working hard on various ground maintenance tasks to prepare for the start of the new season.
On the pitch the start of the new league campaign is particularly eagerly anticipated after the excellent results at the end of last season, when 13 wins in the last 16 league matches secured a very good third place. A continuation of that form could enable the team to make a serious challenge for the league title. At the time of writing, the composition
Olney Tennis Club
We ran a successful day as part of the LTA’s Great British Tennis Weekend, when many children and adults
came along for a free tennis session, after which a number have joined.
We recently raised £1,050 for the Alzheimer’s Society at our very social tennis event. There were 32 players and many spectators who enjoyed the great refreshments. Thank you to all who supported us and many thanks to local solicitors J. Garrard and Allen for their kind sponsorship.
We are hoping for a good turnout at our Wimbledon American Tournament (sponsored by Stephanie Price Wealth Planning) with Wimbledon inspiring many to play. The event takes place on Sunday 3rd July. All standards welcome and free to play and enjoy strawberries and cream. Just call Lynda on 01234 713132 or sign up in the clubhouse.
With the adult teams (sponsored by Stephen Oakley Estate Agents), the Mixed A are the star team so far this season, leading their division. Firstly we played against Buckingham A and won 5-3 thanks to Jill Bradford, Lynda Baker, Tim Ball and Simon Barter. Then they beat David Lloyd 5-3 with the team this time being Gill Hogston, Tim Ball and Jane and Phil Anderson.
The Ladies B lost a tight match against Stony Stratford 3-5 with many close games due to the battling qualities of Lynda Baker, Sarah Wilkinson, Margaret Currie and Many Elliott. The Mens A kicked off against a very strong Stony Stratford side and lost 1-7 despite the efforts of George Maling, Tim Ball, Phil Anderson and Xavier Vale-Buisson.
The Mens C started their campaign with a good draw against Great Brickhill with Olney’s team being Chris Chappel, Stuart Ayling, Josh Dodd and Malcom Donne.
of the United Counties League Premier Division is not yet formally con rmed, but our local rivals Kempston Rovers, who won the league last season, are likely to be promoted, so for the rst time in many years they will not be Newport’s opponents on Boxing Day and Easter Monday.
The start date for the UCL league programme has not yet been announced. The FA Cup round dates have been published, with the Extra Preliminary Round scheduled for 6th August, a week earlier than usual, but the draw for that round has not yet taken place.
After one season without a Reserve team there will once again be Reserve team football at Willen Road this season. Newport Pagnell Town Reserves are expected to be playing in the Reserve Division of the United Counties League. David Ashcroft, a former Olney Town Reserves manager, has recently been appointed as manager of Newport Pagnell Town Reserves.
Keep an eye on the club’s website for up to date club news and details of any pre-season friendly matches in July.
