And that%u2019s certainly the case with this musical group.Wolverton Gilbert & Sullivan Society is a thriving and successful amateur live music theatre group which is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. Members perform the works of Gilbert & Sullivan as well as other great musicals, bringing people together with songs and smiles. Rehearsals are every Friday evening at 7.30pm in Wolverton, plus Wednesdays when needed, which means they can stage two productions a year, usually at Stantonbury Theatre. %u201cWe also join with our friends at Wolverton Light Orchestra to sing in their Christmas concert each year,%u201d says member Ruth Martin.There%u2019s no audition to join the chorus and everyone is welcome to see what they think before becoming a member. If backstage is more of an interest, they would love help with that too. %u201cWith accessible rehearsal and performance venues, the group is open to all, so why not come along and meet everyone?%u201d says Ruth.Auditions are held for principal roles in each production, and the group is fortunate to have a live orchestra in the pit for productions. Outside of rehearsals and performances, this friendly club has regular theatre trips and a summer barbecue. Its 50th celebrations begin with a special concert at Stantonbury Theatre (which is also 50 this year) on 7th and 8th November, featuring fabulous songs from all the Gilbert & Sullivan shows, together with a selection of numbers from the wide range of our other productions. This will be followed up by a production of Patience from 7th to 10th May next year. The society has performed all but one of Gilbert & Sullivan%u2019s pieces, including the lesser-known ones %u2013 Utopia Limited and The Grand Duke %u2013 in that 50-year period. They have also included two pieces written by Sullivan without his usual partner %u2013 Cox and Box and The Zoo. Wolverton G&S Society meets every Friday at 7.30pm at West End United Church, Wolverton, MK12 5JZ. Membership is %u00a3180 per year, and they do not charge any performance fees above that.
